Abdominal Hysterectomy
Procedure Description
remove the uterus with incision on abdomen
What To Expect
Usually lasts 1-2 hours and done with general anesthesia. You have no memory of the procedure or operating room and you will feel no pain during the procedure. I wiil be present with you in the operating room from the beginning to end of the operation.
Preprocedure
Night before: 1. Nothing to eat or drink from midnight on except a sip of water 2. OK to brush teeth that AM 3. Sleep well, go to bed early 4. Shower that evening or AM, do not shave the area of surgery
Postprocedure
Go home on second post-op day. Diet as tolerated Keep clean, OK to get incision wet in shower or bath, don't soak. NOTHING in vagina for 6 weeks: no douching, no intercourse, no tampons until after 6 week post-op check-up No driving the car until off narcotic pain medicines No heavy lifting or exercise No lying around and acting sick--gradually resume normal activities as tolerated. Follow-up appoointments at 1 week and 6 weeks post-op Call the office (885-8563) if you are sick or something is not right
